ICE Detainee Dies in Texas Facility; Death Called "Presumed Suicide"
A Nicaraguan man held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has died in a Texas detention center. The agency described the death as a "presumed suicide." Victor Manuel Diaz, 36, died on Jan. 14 at the Camp East Montana facility in El Paso, according to an ICE statement. The agency uses the term "presumed suicide" before a final medical ruling is made. ICE stated that the agency’s Health Service Corps and facility staff responded to the medical emergency. Officials have notified the Nicaraguan government and U.S. homeland security authorities. The case is under review by ICE, as is standard following any detainee death. The agency also stated that the local medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
