Major ISIS Prison Break in Syria After Government Deal

Around 1,500 Islamic State (ISIS) prisoners escaped a jail in northeastern Syria on Monday. The reported mass breakout threatens a major new security crisis. The escape happened at a prison in the city of Shaddadi. The facility was controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). A Kurdish news outlet, Rudaw, reported the number, citing an SDF spokesman. Earlier, the Syrian army stated that "a number of" ISIS fighters had escaped. It directly accused the SDF of releasing the prisoners. This major security breach occurred just one day after the announcement of a wide-ranging deal. That agreement was between the Syrian government and the SDF's political wing. The deal aimed to integrate Kurdish forces into the Syrian army and restore state services in the region. The prison break now raises serious questions about the stability of the new arrangement and the continued threat from ISIS.
