Heavy snowfall has triggered deadly avalanches in the Austrian Alps, killing eight skiers in the past week.
The victims, all skiers, were caught in separate incidents off marked slopes. Authorities report one avalanche buried five people near the St. Anton am Arlberg resort. Another buried three near the Swiss border.
Recent heavy snow has created dangerous conditions. The Austrian avalanche warning service has rated the risk as "considerable" on high-altitude slopes.
Officials strongly warn against skiing in unsecured, off-piste areas. All ski resorts' official, secured runs remain open and safe.
