A senior U.S. congressman has warned that any American military action to take Greenland would mean war with the NATO alliance.
Republican Representative Michael McCaul issued the stark warning in a Sunday interview. He stated that a U.S. invasion to obtain the territory would put America in direct conflict with its own NATO allies.
Greenland is a vast, autonomous Arctic island. It is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a founding member of NATO. The U.S. has a major air base there but does not control the territory.
McCaul's comments highlight the severe diplomatic and military consequences of such an extreme action. An attack on Greenland would be considered an attack on Denmark, triggering NATO's collective defense clause. This requires all members, including the United States, to respond.
