There is growing embarrassment among FIFA staff over the organization's decision to award its peace prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Mid-level and senior officials are reportedly uncomfortable with the award, which was presented in December. FIFA President Gianni Infantino gave Trump the prize at the World Cup draw, praising him as a unifying leader.
Since the ceremony, the U.S. has launched airstrikes in Venezuela and captured that country's president. The U.S. also jailed him on serious criminal charges. Additionally, Trump has publicly threatened to invade Greenland.
FIFA's leadership says it still strongly supports the decision to give Trump the peace prize. But the recent military actions and threats have caused clear discomfort within the organization's ranks.
