Museveni Wins, Rival Hides: Uganda Election Marred by Chaos
Uganda's long-time president, Yoweri Museveni, has been declared the winner of a disputed national election. The result extends his 35-year rule. His main opponent, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, rejected the outcome. He alleges widespread vote-rigging and state violence. Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said he is now in hiding. He claims his home is surrounded by soldiers and that his safety is threatened. He urged his supporters to protest the result peacefully. International observers noted a climate of fear during the voting process. The internet was shut down for five days. There were also reports of harassment against opposition agents. The electoral commission stated Museveni secured 58% of the vote, with Bobi Wine receiving 34%. The army remains deployed in the capital, Kampala, to prevent unrest. President Museveni, 76, has led Uganda since 1986. He has previously accused the opposition of promoting foreign interference and disorder.
