Denmark has become the first country to stop its state-run home letter delivery service. The national postal company, PostNord, made the decision after a 90% drop in letter volume.
The move ends a public service that began in 1624. Daily mail delivery to homes was a cornerstone of Danish society for generations.
Now, physical letters will only be delivered to centralized postal boxes in local communities. Residents must collect their own mail. Businesses can still pay for private delivery services.
PostNord says the drastic decline in letters, replaced by digital communication, made the old system unsustainable. The company will now focus on competitive package delivery.
