President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree granting new rights to Syria's Kurdish community. The move is a major shift in policy toward the minority group.
The decree formally recognizes the Kurdish language and Kurdish cultural identity. It also grants Syrian citizenship to thousands of stateless Kurds, known as "maktoumeen."
Additionally, the Kurdish spring festival of Nowruz will become an official national holiday in Syria.
The Kurdish population, concentrated in northern Syria, has long sought these rights. The decree comes after years of complex conflict in the region, where Kurdish-led forces control significant territory.
Analysts suggest the move may be an attempt to foster national unity and weaken separatist sentiments. The immediate practical effects of the decree inside Syria are not yet clear.
