A portrait by Gustav Klimt has sold for $32 million, becoming the second most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. The 1914 painting depicts Austrian heiress Elisabeth Lederer.
The artwork has a difficult history. Nazis looted the portrait from the Lederer family during World War II. It was nearly destroyed before the war ended.
The sale took place at a recent auction in Vienna. The high price reflects the painting's artistic value and its historical significance as a recovered object.
