President Donald Trump has renewed his push for the United States to purchase Greenland. This comes just two days after both nations agreed to form a high-level working group to discuss cooperation.
The U.S. president confirmed his interest in the Danish territory on Sunday. He then suggested imposing trade tariffs on Denmark if officials continue to oppose the idea.
“Essentially, it’s a large real estate deal,” Mr. Trump said of the proposed purchase.
Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Its government and Denmark have both firmly rejected the notion of a sale, calling it “absurd.”
The new threat of tariffs, a tax on imported goods, marks a sharp escalation. It raises immediate questions about the future of the recently announced U.S.-Denmark working group.
