Kevin Hassett, a leading economic adviser to Donald Trump, has dismissed the significance of a Justice Department investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
Hassett, who is considered a top candidate to replace Powell, said he expects there is "nothing to see here." He suggested he believes Powell told the truth about a renovation of the Fed's offices.
The Justice Department recently escalated its probe by serving the Fed with grand jury subpoenas. This move is seen as a major increase in the Trump administration's unprecedented challenge to the central bank's independence.
The administration has faced widespread criticism since the investigation became public.
