A court in Burundi has sentenced journalist Sandra Muhoza to four years in prison. Her crime was based on comments she made in a private WhatsApp group. Muhoza has already been in jail for nearly two years awaiting trial. This was her second trial on the charges. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a press freedom group, condemned the sentence. It called on Burundian authorities to stop persecuting Muhoza and to release her immediately. The case highlights the severe risks for journalists and citizens in Burundi who criticize the government, even in private digital conversations.
