Former President Donald Trump has threatened to use the Insurrection Act in Minnesota. This law allows a U.S. president to deploy the military domestically to suppress civil disorder.
The threat is a response to ongoing protests in Minneapolis. The protests target federal immigration enforcement operations. They follow the fatal shooting of a woman named Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent one week ago.
In a social media post, Trump said he would use the act to "quickly put an end to the travesty." He accused Minnesota's politicians of not stopping what he called "professional agitators and insurrectionists" from attacking ICE personnel.
Minnesota's Governor, Tim Walz, has separately urged demonstrators to remain peaceful. He called for calm amid escalating tensions.
The Insurrection Act is rarely invoked. Its use would represent a significant federal intervention in state affairs.
