Tanzania's Opposition Handed Key Financial Watchdog Roles

Tanzania's new parliament has placed two major financial oversight committees under opposition leadership. The 13th Parliament, seated in Dodoma, has formed 17 committees. In a significant move, it has appointed opposition MPs to chair the sensitive Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Local Authorities Accounts Committee (LAAC). These committees are watchdog bodies. They monitor government spending and investigate the use of public funds. Placing them under opposition control is a notable step in parliamentary oversight. The move is seen as strengthening the role of the opposition in holding the government to account. It follows the standard practice of many democracies, where key audit committees are led by the non-governing parties.
