A federal appeals court has upheld a California law that redraws congressional districts to favor Democrats. The ruling on Wednesday allows the state to proceed with its plan for the upcoming elections.
The law, called Proposition 50, is a direct response to recent redistricting in Texas. There, Republican leaders adjusted maps to gain more U.S. House seats for their party.
California's measure creates temporary district changes to counter the Texas moves. Governor Gavin Newsom called the Republican lawsuit against it a "weak attempt to silence voters."
The court's decision is a significant development ahead of the midterm elections, a time when control of Congress often changes.
