Ancient Masks and Bells: Bulgarian Ritual Chases Winter Away

In villages across Bulgaria, a centuries-old tradition marks the turn of the season. Each January, performers known as Kukeri dress in elaborate costumes and parade through the streets. The dancers wear large, carved wooden masks. Their costumes are made from animal fur and decorated with colorful threads. Heavy bells are tied around their waists. Their loud, energetic performance is a ritual. Its purpose is to scare off evil spirits. The ceremony is also meant to ensure a good harvest and health for the community in the coming year. By symbolically banishing winter's darkness, the Kukeri festival welcomes the new year and the promise of spring.
