Organizers removed a woman from a punishing UK ultramarathon after she received death threats. The threats were linked to her charity work for women and girls in Afghanistan.
Sarah Porter was competing in the 108-mile Montane Winter Spine Challenger South. The race is known as one of Britain's most difficult endurance events.
She was approximately one-third through the course when the race security team intervened. They disabled her public tracking device and withdrew her from the competition.
Race officials called it a "difficult decision." They acted due to direct threats against Porter's life related to her fundraising. Porter runs a charity that supports women and girls in conflict zones, including Afghanistan.
