Singapore Port Smashes Record as Global Trade Slumps
Singapore's port moved a record number of shipping containers last year. This happened even as global trade slowed down. The port handled 39 million standard containers in 2023. This is a 4.6% increase from the year before. The result is surprising. Major economies worldwide are facing high inflation and weak demand. Analysts say Singapore's success comes from its role as a key "transshipment" hub. This means many containers are moved between large ships and smaller regional vessels there. They are not necessarily for Singapore's own use. The record volume shows that global trade routes are still active. However, the types of goods being shipped may be changing. There is also increased competition from other regional ports. Port operators warn that economic uncertainties and rising costs remain serious challenges for 2024.
