Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton say they will not testify in a congressional investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement, their legal team said they would not comply with a subpoena. They called the probe a political tactic "designed to result in our imprisonment."
The investigation is led by Republican lawmakers. They are now preparing to start contempt of Congress proceedings against the Clintons.
Such proceedings could lead to criminal charges for defying the subpoena. The probe is examining Epstein's network and the immunity deal given to his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Bill Clinton is known to have flown on Epstein's plane. He has previously stated he had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes.
