Uganda’s capital, Kampala, filled with soldiers on Tuesday. The military deployment comes as the country prepares for a general election on Thursday.
President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for 35 years, and his main opponent, singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine, held their final campaign rallies. The government says the soldiers are needed to keep peace.
But opposition leaders call the move a sign of authoritarianism. They say it aims to scare voters and suppress protest. Authorities have banned all election-related social media use.
Museveni seeks a sixth term. His rival, Bobi Wine, has been arrested multiple times during the campaign. International observers warn the conditions may not ensure a fair vote.
