Spain has condemned what it calls an "unacceptable" attack by Israel on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred when Israeli tank shells landed near a position manned by Spanish troops.
Madrid described the event as a "serious escalation." The Spanish soldiers, part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were not injured. UNIFIL's mission is to maintain calm along the border between Lebanon and Israel.
The attack highlights the growing risk to international forces as cross-border fighting intensifies. UNIFIL has repeatedly called for an end to the exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
Spain has demanded a full investigation from Israeli authorities. The Israeli military has not yet issued a public statement on the specific incident involving the Spanish contingent.
