Former President Donald Trump has publicly pressured the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates following the latest inflation report.
The U.S. Consumer Price Index showed annual inflation met market forecasts in December. In a social media post, Trump called the numbers "Great (LOW!)" and directly addressed Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
He wrote that Powell, whom he nicknamed "Too Late," should enact a "MEANINGFULLY!!!" large rate cut.
The Federal Reserve is an independent agency. Its decisions on interest rates are meant to control inflation and ensure economic stability, not respond to political demands. The Fed raised rates aggressively to combat high inflation and has recently signaled a pause.
