A major new airport in Ethiopia is set to become the largest aviation hub in Africa. But its cost has risen sharply.
The Bishoftu Airport project, near the capital Addis Ababa, was first expected to cost $10 billion. Officials have now revised the budget to $12.5 billion.
The increase is due to inflation and design modifications. The airport aims to handle over 100 million passengers annually.
It will replace the current Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The project is a key part of Ethiopia's plan to boost its economy and global trade links.
Construction timelines have not been announced. The final design will determine when Africa's new premier travel gateway opens.
