Lawmakers in two US states are proposing new laws to protect fossil fuel companies. These laws would block most climate-related lawsuits against the oil and gas industry.
In Oklahoma, a new bill would prevent civil lawsuits that blame oil companies for their role in climate change. The only exceptions would be for cases alleging breaks in specific environmental or labor laws.
A similar proposal in Utah aims to stop lawsuits over greenhouse gas emissions. A case could only proceed if a court first found the company broke an existing law or permit.
If passed, these measures would create a major legal barrier. They would restrict the ability of communities or individuals to sue fossil fuel producers over climate damages.
