Mattel has released a new autistic Barbie doll. It is the latest addition to the company's "Fashionistas" line, which focuses on diversity and inclusion.
The doll was created with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). This charity works to advance the rights of people with autism. Development took more than 18 months.
The doll has a fidget toy and wears noise-canceling headphones. These are common sensory tools used by some autistic people. Its clothing and shoes are also designed to be sensory-friendly.
It joins other Barbies in the line representing different conditions. These include dolls with Down syndrome, a blind doll, and dolls with the skin condition vitiligo.
Mattel stated the goal is to reflect the wider world. The company hopes this allows more children to see themselves in the popular toy.
