Iran in the Dark: Internet Blackout Hides Crackdown, Says Expert
Many Iranians do not know the full scale of ongoing protests or the government's violent response, an observer reports. This is due to a severe internet blackout. Kevan Gafaïti, a lecturer at Sciences Po Paris, spoke to FRANCE 24. He recently left Iran. He stated the internet shutdown is stopping information from spreading inside the country. The blackout has two major effects. First, it keeps citizens unaware of the nationwide demonstrations. Second, it prevents people from organizing more protests. Gafaïti spoke with FRANCE 24's Mark Owen. He explained that without internet access, the population cannot share news or coordinate actions. This leaves many "in the dark" about the situation.
