Alain Orsoni was shot and killed during his mother's funeral on the French island of Corsica. Police report the fatal shot was fired from a long distance.
Orsoni, 69, was a prominent public figure. He previously led a major Corsican separatist group, the Corsican Movement for Self-Determination. Separatists want Corsica to become independent from France.
He later became the president of the island's professional football club, AC Ajaccio.
