Former Football Club President Assassinated at Mother's Funeral

Alain Orsoni was shot and killed during his mother's funeral on the French island of Corsica. Police report the fatal shot was fired from a long distance. Orsoni, 69, was a prominent public figure. He previously led a major Corsican separatist group, the Corsican Movement for Self-Determination. Separatists want Corsica to become independent from France. He later became the president of the island's professional football club, AC Ajaccio. The assassination occurred in the village of Pila-Canale. Authorities have launched a murder investigation. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
