A Florida woman has been criminally charged after she allegedly posed as the father of a Texas flood victim to solicit money online.
Maitlin Paige White, 28, is accused of online impersonation. Court records show she created a GoFundMe campaign pretending to be Matthew Childress.
Childress’s 18-year-old daughter, Chloe, died in the July flooding at Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas. She was working as a camp counselor.
Authorities say White solicited donations in the days following the teenager’s death. The case was discovered after multiple news outlets reviewed the court records.
Online impersonation is a criminal offense. The charges highlight the misuse of fundraising platforms after tragedies.
