Comedian Wanda Sykes accepted a major award for Ricky Gervais at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony. Gervais was not present to receive the award for Best Stand-Up Special on Television.
Sykes accepted the honor on his behalf. In her brief remarks, she offered pointed thanks to two specific groups.
"On behalf of Ricky," Sykes said, "I would like to thank God and the trans community."
The line drew immediate reaction from the audience. Gervais has often drawn controversy for material critics call offensive to transgender people and other groups.
The Golden Globe was awarded for Gervais's Netflix special, "Ricky Gervais: Armageddon." He has not yet publicly commented on Sykes's acceptance speech.
