The head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a direct challenge to global leaders. He stated that widespread, severe hunger caused by conflict is a deliberate human decision and must be stopped.
WFP Executive Director David Beasley warned that a record 318 million people now face crisis-level hunger. This is a 60% increase since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Three main forces are driving this emergency: ongoing wars, severe climate shocks, and a critical shortage of funding. Beasley emphasized that while climate disasters are a major threat, armed conflict remains the primary cause of famine today.
He argued that famines created by war are not unavoidable natural events. They are, in his words, a "choice" made by those in power. The call demands political solutions to allow food aid to reach those trapped in conflict zones.
The WFP also faces a severe funding gap. Soaring food and fuel prices have increased its operational costs, while donor nations have not provided enough money to meet the unprecedented need.
