Guantánamo: 25 Years Open, 6 Men Still Await Trial

The U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, has now been operating for a quarter of a century. It opened in January 2002 to hold prisoners from the "war on terror." The prison has remained open long after the end of the war in Afghanistan. Over the years, tens of thousands of military personnel have served temporary assignments there. Today, only about 30 detainees remain. Of these, six are charged in the September 11, 2001, attacks and other major plots. Their cases are capital cases, meaning prosecutors seek the death penalty. Yet none of these six men have faced a final trial. Their complex legal proceedings, held in a military court system, continue with no end in sight. As the prison enters its 26th year, these landmark cases remain unresolved.
