A senior European Union official has called for the creation of a "European Security Council." This new body would streamline the bloc's foreign policy and defense decisions.
The proposal was made by Andrius Kubilius, a European Parliament member and former Lithuanian prime minister. He argues that the current EU system is too slow for today's security threats.
Kubilius stated that a smaller, more agile council is needed. It would ensure faster and more unified European action on global crises. The model is inspired by the United Nations Security Council, but for EU members only.
The idea highlights a growing push for Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities. This movement has gained urgency since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
If formed, the council would aim to make Europe a more decisive and independent global security power.
