Yemen's Southern Separatists Disarm in Surprise Move for Unity
The chief of Yemen's presidential council has announced a major step toward ending the country's internal conflicts. Rashad al-Alimi stated that the full disarmament of rival groups is the essential requirement to rebuild the state. His comments followed the unexpected dissolution of the Southern Transitional Council's (STC) armed units. The STC is a powerful group that has controlled parts of southern Yemen and sought independence. Al-Alimi praised the move as a "responsible step." He said it creates a chance to restore government institutions across the entire country. Yemen has been divided by war since 2014. The conflict is primarily between the internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels. However, separatist groups like the STC have also fought for control in the south. The disarmament deal, if fully implemented, could unite the anti-Houthi factions. This would allow them to focus on a potential peace process with the Houthis. Observers warn that successfully integrating these armed forces remains a significant challenge.
