Ukraine says it has successfully attacked Russian oil drilling platforms. The targets are in the Caspian Sea, far from the front lines.
The operation targeted the "Volga" and "Caspian Driller" platforms. Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) claims these sites were used for military purposes. It says they housed air defense systems and served as helicopter bases.
A special forces unit reportedly carried out the strike. The GUR states the platforms are now "unusable." It published video footage showing explosions on the structures.
This attack marks a significant extension of Ukraine's reach. The Caspian Sea is over 200 kilometers from Ukrainian-held territory. It is a major area for Russian oil and gas extraction.
Russian authorities have not yet commented on the Ukrainian claim. There has been no independent verification of the damage.
If confirmed, the strike demonstrates Ukraine's growing ability to hit strategic Russian assets. It targets both energy infrastructure and military logistics in a previously secure region.
