A senior Belgian official has called for NATO to launch a major new initiative in the Arctic. He says the move is needed to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the strategically vital region.
Theo Francken, Belgium’s Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, made the statement. He is also a member of the Belgian Defense Commission.
Francken specifically mentioned Greenland, a vast autonomous territory of Denmark. "This would clearly show Russia and China that Greenland is part of NATO," he said.
His comments highlight growing concerns within the alliance. Russia is heavily investing in its Arctic military capabilities. China, while not an Arctic state, has declared itself a "near-Arctic state" and is expanding its economic and research activities there.
NATO has increased its focus on the High North in recent years. However, Francken’s proposal suggests a more permanent and visible presence is now required.
The Arctic is becoming increasingly important due to melting ice. This is opening new shipping routes and access to valuable natural resources.
