Former President Donald Trump and his vice-presidential nominee, J.D. Vance, have publicly described an Ohio woman who died in 2021 as a "domestic terrorist."
The woman, Renee Good, was a 43-year-old mother. She died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police standoff. The incident occurred after a routine traffic stop.
Authorities at the time reported that Good fired at police officers. They returned fire. No officers were injured. The local county prosecutor later stated there was "no evidence" Good was involved in terrorism.
Trump and Vance made the claim in response to a news report. The report revealed Good's name was listed in a U.S. government terrorism database. Inclusion in this database does not legally certify someone as a terrorist.
Legal experts and former officials note the database has a low threshold for entry. It can include names based on unverified tips. There is no public evidence Good planned or committed an act of terrorism.
The label has drawn criticism from Good's family and civil liberties groups. They accuse the politicians of exploiting her death for political gain.
