The legal team for Luigi Mangione appeared in court Friday to prevent federal prosecutors from seeking the death penalty.
Mangione is on trial for the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He pleaded not guilty in April 2025.
His lawyers are now fighting a separate legal battle against the U.S. Justice Department. They aim to stop the government from asking for capital punishment, the most severe penalty available.
The case continues in federal court.
