Massachusetts has approved new rules allowing people to use marijuana in certain public spaces. Licensed businesses, including yoga studios, movie theaters, and cafes, can now apply for permits to allow on-site cannabis consumption.
The change creates legal, social spaces for adults to use cannabis, similar to bars for alcohol. Until now, public consumption has been largely restricted to private homes.
Businesses must still receive approval from both state regulators and their local city or town. The venues will be required to have strong ventilation systems and keep cannabis areas separate from any alcohol service.
This makes Massachusetts one of the first U.S. states to establish a legal framework for "social consumption" of recreational marijuana. The policy aims to provide safe options for tourists and residents in apartments where smoking may be prohibited.
