A Russian missile attack hit the western Ukrainian city of Lviv early today. The weapon used was an "Oreshnik," a missile system known to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The assault was part of a wider series of attacks across Ukraine. In the east, Russian drones targeted energy infrastructure. This caused blackouts in cities already suffering from temperatures as low as -20°C.
Separately, Russia also attacked civilian vessels near the port of Odesa. The strike killed a Syrian sailor on a foreign-flagged ship. Ukraine says the ships were carrying grain.
These events mark a severe escalation on the 1416th day of the war. They combine a strategic weapon strike, attacks on critical winter power supplies, and a deadly assault on international shipping.
