Sudan's military leader has ordered the immediate release of 400 female inmates. The women were all accused of cooperating with the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan issued the directive as head of the Sovereign Council. He instructed officials to review the legal status of these detainees.
The order aims to speed up court proceedings and protect the women's legal rights. It is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Sudan's army and the RSF.
The war, which began in April 2023, has created a severe humanitarian crisis. Both sides have been accused of detaining civilians suspected of aiding the enemy.
