Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest person, has formally accused a former Nigerian oil regulator of corruption. The billionaire chairman of Dangote Industries Limited has filed a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The petition targets Farouk Ahmed. He is the former managing director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). This agency oversees the country's fuel refining, supply, and distribution.
Dangote alleges that Ahmed abused his office. The specific accusations involve corrupt practices during Ahmed's tenure. The EFCC is Nigeria's primary agency for investigating financial crimes.
The petition moves a long-running dispute into the legal arena. Dangote's massive new oil refinery has previously clashed with regulators over fuel import rules. The EFCC must now decide whether to open a formal investigation.
