A senior U.S. senator is demanding the FBI explain how it chooses secret code names for investigations. This follows the release of records showing the bureau renamed a probe into former President Donald Trump.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley received documents indicating FBI agents changed the investigation's code name to "Arctic Frost." In a letter to the FBI, Grassley stated this rename appears "anything but random."
Grassley, whose committee oversees the FBI, is now pressing the bureau for details on its naming process. He wants to know what rules or guidelines agents follow when assigning these confidential labels.
The FBI uses code names for its investigations to maintain secrecy and internal organization. Grassley's inquiry suggests the change in this case may have been unusual.
The FBI has not yet publicly responded to the senator's request for information.
