Japan-South Korea Business Mood Soars as Tensions Thaw

A new survey shows a dramatic shift in sentiment among Japanese and South Korean companies. Nearly half now say relations between the two nations are improving. The joint report, released by major business lobbies from both countries, reveals that 44% of firms see ties getting better. This figure has more than doubled from just 21% a year ago. The sharp rise follows a political effort to mend long-strained relations. South Korea’s government recently announced a solution to a major trade dispute. The plan involves Korean companies compensating victims of wartime labor, without direct funds from Japan. This diplomatic breakthrough is boosting business confidence. Over 80% of surveyed companies expect economic cooperation to increase. Sectors like automobiles, machinery, and steel are seen as having the most potential for growth. However, historical and political issues remain a concern. These are still seen as the biggest obstacle to better business relations. The survey indicates that while the mood is positive, a full reset will take more time.
