Trump Accuses Venezuela of Stealing U.S. Oil. The Reality Is More Complex.
President Donald Trump has accused Venezuela of seizing and selling American oil. However, experts say the history between the two nations is far more complicated. The statement refers to a shipment of oil owned by the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA. This oil was sitting in a terminal in the Caribbean nation of Curacao. Earlier this year, the U.S. government imposed sanctions on PDVSA. It also recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country's legitimate president. This move effectively blocked the Maduro government from accessing assets like the oil in Curacao. A U.S. court later ruled that Guaidó's team had the right to control those assets. The oil was then sold, with proceeds intended for Guaidó's government. Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro views this as the unlawful seizure of his country's property. From the U.S. legal perspective, the sale transferred assets from one recognized Venezuelan authority to another.
