A French researcher detained in Moscow for 19 months has been freed and returned to Paris. Laurent Vinatier was exchanged in a prisoner swap on Thursday.
Russia released Vinatier in return for two of its citizens held in France. They are a Russian basketball player and a convicted hacker.
Vinatier was arrested in June 2023. Russian authorities accused him of gathering military information without state registration, which they called an espionage-related offense.
The direct exchange of prisoners between France and Russia is a rare diplomatic event. It highlights ongoing negotiations between the two nations despite severe tensions over the war in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Vinatier's return. He stated the government had worked continuously for the researcher's release since his detention began.
