Russian forces have again used a rare and advanced hypersonic missile against Ukraine. This marks only the second confirmed deployment of the weapon.
The missile, known as the Oreshnik, is a hypersonic ballistic weapon. This means it can travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, making it extremely difficult to intercept with existing air defenses.
It was first used to strike the city of Dnipro in November 2023. Its use now indicates Russia may be integrating this high-precision weapon into its regular arsenal for striking high-value targets.
The latest strikes are part of a renewed Russian aerial campaign targeting Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure. The Oreshnik's reappearance underscores the ongoing technological escalation in the conflict.
