A key separatist group in Yemen has dissolved its governing body in a surprise move to advance peace talks.
The Southern Transitional Council (STC) announced it is disbanding its leadership council. The group says this action will help start broader negotiations. These future talks will focus on the future of southern Yemen.
The STC controls large parts of southern Yemen, including the major port city of Aden. It has long sought independence or greater autonomy for the south.
The planned negotiations will be sponsored by Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is leading international efforts to end Yemen's long-running civil war.
This dissolution is seen as a significant step before the talks in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. It may help unify southern factions at the negotiating table.
