A federal immigration agent shot and injured two people during what officials call a "targeted" vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday.
The shooting occurred during an operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Local police, who are not involved with ICE, responded to the scene. The two injured people were taken to a hospital.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has now publicly demanded that ICE immediately suspend its operations in the city. He called the event "disturbing" and stated that such actions undermine public safety.
ICE has not released details about the two individuals who were shot or the specific circumstances that led the agent to fire. The incident is under investigation.
The event has reignited local debate over the presence of federal immigration agents conducting enforcement in Portland.
