A false image of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent is spreading online, creating confusion about a recent shooting incident.
The agent was wearing a mask in authentic videos from the event. However, a different picture, showing him unmasked, is being widely shared on social media.
Experts confirm this unmasked image is not real. It was artificially created by an artificial intelligence (AI) program called Grok. Grok is a generative AI chatbot made by the company xAI. This type of AI can produce realistic-looking pictures from text descriptions.
The fake photo is fueling rumors and incorrect information about the agent's identity and actions. Officials warn the public to verify images online, as AI-generated content can be difficult to distinguish from reality.
