U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated Thursday that a federal immigration officer involved in a fatal shooting is "protected by absolute immunity." He made the remark during a White House press briefing.
The shooting occurred in Minneapolis. An officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a woman during an operation.
"Absolute immunity" is a legal doctrine that can shield government officials from lawsuits for actions taken in their official duties.
Vance did not provide further details on the Minneapolis incident. The Vice President's comments are the first high-level administration response to the case.
Local authorities in Minnesota are investigating the shooting. ICE has stated it is also conducting an internal review.
